So How Much Technology is the Right Amount of Technology?

So how much technology in a classroom is the right amount? Lots of factors to consider I imagine. No good one size fits all. I can compare what may be a decent answer to light bulbs. If you are teaching in a face to face class, you might want to have some control over the light bulbs in the room. When they are on, it is easier to do some things well. An overhead projector can serve a useful purpose too. You can show big pictures to the class rather than walk around the classroom holding a book with the same picture in it. Technology is good when it serves a purpose. Part of the challenge for us is to get to know and understand the available technologies that are already available and see if we can find a useful purpose for them.

The video below is a six minute parody on a Technology in the Classroom course. Note near the end the students share what they “want/need” from the class. A Wired Campus article about the video is here.

  1. That was funny! Good job. I feel like the teacher right now, but I know things will get better.

  2. So true. We have all of this technology at our fingertips, now, let's incorporate it's use into our daily lesson plans.
Also, it was really interesting to see that the kids wanted to be an active part in the learning environment, and not just have the professor reading his notes.
